Pharmaceutical Group of the European Union (PGEU)

The ABDA – Federal Union of German Associations of Pharmacists is member of the Pharmaceutical Group of the European Union (PGEU). Its last German president was the then ABDA president Heinz-Günter Wolf in 2011. In 2021, ABDA vice president Mathias Arnold held the position of PGEU vice president.

An important task of the PGEU is to strengthen the role of independent and self-employed pharmacists in Europe’s health systems. Taking national characteristics into account, the association supports the idea of developing high-quality benchmarks for pharmaceutical services. In 2012, the PGEU General Assembly adopted a “European Community Pharmacy Blueprint” containing four principle areas of modern pharmacy practice: medicine safety and access to medicines, treatment outcomes of individual patients, public health, and efficiency and quality of the health system. Other important subjects are the fight against counterfeit medicines, the strengthening of patient-focused health systems and the challenges resulting from demographic change in Europe.

Germany’s pharmacists have an own office in Brussels. Head of the European representation of the ABDA is Dr Jens Gobrecht. The Brussels-based PGEU represents around 500,000 community pharmacists and 200,000 pharmacies from currently 33 European countries.
